| | | | | | | One member of the pride who did not roar to help drive the strangers away was Simba. This morning she was busy with other matters. During the night she had gone off alone and found an isolated dip in the ground, bordered by tall grass. There she lay down and slept until she was awakened by the first contractions of labor. Within an hour, four cubstwo males and two femaleswere born. It was Simba's first littler but she seemed to know just what to do, cleaning and drying each cub and guiding it to a nipple to nurse. The newborn cubs were smallabout three pounds eachand totally helpless. They were toothless, their eyes were shut tight and, for the first day of life, they could not even crawl. Their wooly yellow fur was covered with dark spots which would fade as they grew up but which, for now, helped to camouflage the kittens. The cubs' survival depended completely on Simba's skill at keeping them concealed, warm and well-fed. | | | | | | | | | |
